چکیده

easily fill an article or, indeed, a monograph. This systematic screen for developmental mutations has revolutionized developmental genetics, and it provides a veritable Who’s Who of developmental regulatory genes, each of which has given rise to an entire cottage industry of research. Of course the two papers also led directly to a Nobel Prize, which just means that they have good taste in Stockholm. I also have a favorite lecture. The clear choice is Francis Crick in 1962, presenting genetic studies on the triplet nature of the genetic code in a blackboard lecture without slides. The clarity, elegance and excitement of this talk that guided the audience through the logic of the experiments has remained vivid in my memory ever since.

Hummingbirds can fuel expensive hovering flight completely with either exogenous glucose or fructose

1. Hummingbirds have specialized on a diet consisting almost exclusively of a mixture of sucrose, glucose and fructose found in floral nectar. Previous studies have shown that hummingbirds can fuel energetically expensive hovering flight almost exclusively using recently ingested sucrose. However, the relative capacities for the direct utilization of glucose and fructose by hovering hummingbird...

Flight mechanics and control of escape manoeuvres in hummingbirds. I. Flight kinematics.

Hummingbirds are nature's masters of aerobatic manoeuvres. Previous research shows that hummingbirds and insects converged evolutionarily upon similar aerodynamic mechanisms and kinematics in hovering. Herein, we use three-dimensional kinematic data to begin to test for similar convergence of kinematics used for escape flight and to explore the effects of body size upon manoeuvring. We studied ...

Fossil hummingbirds in the Old World

acteristic of the New World fauna as hummingbirds (Trochilidae). These ‘flying jewels’ are classified into more than 300 modern species, most of which occur in South and Central America from where some have colonised North America (Schuchmann 1999). Hummingbirds do not occur in the Old World today, although the completely unrelated sunbirds (Nectariniidae) or even the hummingbird hawk-moth Macr...

Evaluation of Proctophyllodes huitzilopochtlii on feathers from Anna’s (Calypte anna) and Black-chinned (Archilochus alexandri) Hummingbirds: Prevalence assessment and imaging analysis using light and tabletop scanning electron microscopy

Proctophyllodes huitzilopochtlii Atyeo & Braasch 1966 (Acariformes: Astigmata: Proctophyllodidae), a feather mite, was found on feathers collected from five hummingbird species in California. This mite has not been previously documented on feathers from Anna's (Calypte anna [Lesson 1829]) or Black-chinned (Archilochus alexandri [Bourcier & Mulsant 1846]) Hummingbirds. A total of 753 hummingbird...

Hovering and forward flight energetics in Anna's and Allen's hummingbirds.

Aerodynamic theory predicts that the mechanical costs of flight are lowest at intermediate flight speeds; metabolic costs of flight should trend similarly if muscle efficiency is constant. We measured metabolic rates for nine Anna's hummingbirds (Calypte anna) and two male Allen's hummingbirds (Selasphorus sasin) feeding during flight from a free-standing mask over a range of airspeeds. Ten of ...

Visual Sensory Signals Dominate Tactile Cues during Docked Feeding in Hummingbirds

Animals living in and interacting with natural environments must monitor and respond to changing conditions and unpredictable situations. Using information from multiple sensory systems allows them to modify their behavior in response to their dynamic environment but also creates the challenge of integrating different, and potentially contradictory, sources of information for behavior control. ...
